Dubai abudhabi road accident 200 cars

Ghantoot: At least 20 people have been killed after a series of horrific accidents on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway near Ghantoot on Tuesday morning.

Police have said around 200 cars were involved in the crash, which happened in heavy fog, with 25 cars catching fire.

About seven people with minor injurious from the accident site in Ghantoot were treated and later discharged said a senior doctor from the Accident and Emergency Unit at Rashid hospital.

Serious casualties were taken to Al Rahba and Al Mafraq hospitals in Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Victor Mikhael Butros, in charge of the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital said: "We received the news of the accident at 9am and immediately a team comprising of two doctors and two nurses along with equipments were dispatched to the scene.
"We were told to expect 40 causalities but when our team reached the site we told that only seven accident victims with minor injurious will be sent to us. Those with serious injurious were admitted to two hospitals in Abu Dhabi."

Police also said that because of the bad weather helicopters were unable to begin airlifting the injured until 11.30am.

Eyewitness Tahir S, said: "I was involved in the first crash. I could hardly see anything because of the fog. It was horrible. You could see 10m in front of you.

"After the crash I looked behind and people were yelling and screaming."

Matt, 26, a German national said the scene was chaotic.

He added: "The accident was a combination of fog and people using their hazard lights. I only escaped with a bruise."

Khamis I. Mohammad, deputy of traffic and patrol Abu Dhabi police said: "It was a disaster scene, everyone was speeding and after the first crash happened people just started hitting each other.

"There were six buses carrying labourers, three buses had 50 passengers each."

He also advised people not to use their hazard lights and not to listen to the radio while driving.
Dubai, March 11 (IANS) At least eight people were killed and over 280 injured in a 200-car pileup on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi highway early Tuesday in dense fog, officials said.

At least 25 cars were charred in a series of crashes, which happened in unusually foggy conditions at Ghantoot, 65 km from here, around 6.45 a.m. (8.15 a.m. IST).

Unofficially, the death toll was stated to be much higher, though there was no confirmation.

Zeeshan Javed, who narrowly survived the accident, said he had counted 80 mangled cars.

'There were others that were lying on the road, and still others with injuries waiting to be attended to by the paramedics,' said Imad Eldin, who regularly travels to his workplace in Dubai.

'I have never seen an accident of this magnitude. Some cars that had caught fire were charred beyond recognition. This has to be the worst ever,' Javed said.

Serious casualties have been taken to Al Rahba and Al Mafraq hospitals in Abu Dhabi while other casualties were taken to Rashid Hospital in Dubai.

Police said that because of the bad weather, helicopters were unable to begin airlifting the injured until 11.30 a.m.

Under normal conditions, cars on the eight-lane - four on either side - 165-km stretch between Dubai and Abu Dhabi zip through at a minimum speed of 120 kmph.

Matt, 26, a German national said the scene was chaotic.

'The accident was a combination of fog and people using their hazard lights. I only escaped with a bruise,' he told the Gulf News.

'It was a disaster scene, everyone was speeding and after the first crash happened people just started hitting each other,' Khamis I. Mohammad, deputy of traffic and patrol Abu Dhabi police, said.

'There were six buses carrying labourers, three buses had 50 passengers each.'

It was not immediately known if any Indians or South Asians were among the casualties

Raw Footage: Head-On Car Crash

June 29, 2007, right around 4:00 PM, a King County Metro Van Pool and a grey Honda Accord collided head-on on Bel-Red (Bellevue-Redmond) Road between NE 20 St and 156 Ave NE in Bellevue, Washington. I think at least two people were rushed to Overlake Hospital with possible injuries. Two Bellevue Fire Engines, one Bellevue Aid car, one Tri-Med, and about four Bellevue Police cars all responded and shut down that stretch of road way. No word on the conditions of those involved.
